Every agency answers this question with whatever it happens to sell. The honest answer depends on one thing: how soon you need the work.
This is the comparison every removals owner makes before spending a pound. What each channel does in month one, month three and month twelve, what it costs in real terms, and the situations where one of them is simply the wrong choice.
{ THE SHORT VERSION }
Google Ads produces enquiries in week one and stops the day you stop paying. Ad spend is separate from any management fee.
SEO takes three to six months to show on the phone and keeps working after the work stops.
A mover that needs jobs next month should run Ads, not buy SEO. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
The two together is where most movers see the biggest growth in the shortest time, because Ads covers the months SEO needs to start.
Neither works without enquiry tracking. Fix that first or you cannot judge either.

What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads for a mover?
Both put your business in front of someone searching for removals in your area. The difference is where you appear, how fast, and what happens when you stop.
Google Ads is the paid results at the top of the page. You choose the searches, the towns and the budget, and you pay every time someone clicks. SEO is the unpaid results below the ads and the map, earned by having pages that answer the search better than your competitors. You do not pay per click, but you do pay in time and work to get there.
One point that trips up a lot of owners: with Ads, the money you give Google for clicks is separate from anything you pay an agency to run the account. Budget and management fee are two different lines. When you compare quotes, make sure you know which one you are looking at.
What does Google Ads deliver in month one, three and twelve?
Month one. A properly built campaign produces enquiries in the first week. You will know within a fortnight which towns and services convert and roughly what an enquiry costs you. This is the fastest lever in removals marketing and nothing else comes close.
Month three. The account has enough data to cut the searches that waste money and lean into the ones that book surveys. Cost per enquiry usually improves here, and this is where a well managed account separates from a neglected one.
Month twelve. You have a predictable tap. Turn it up in spring, down in December. What you do not have is anything that keeps working if you switch it off. Ads is rent. The moment you stop paying, the enquiries stop, and next year's cost per click will be a little higher as more movers bid on the same searches.
What does SEO deliver in month one, three and twelve?
Month one. Very little that you can see. The work is technical fixes, new pages for the towns and services you actually serve, and telling Google what the site is about. Impressions in Search Console start to rise before anything else does.
Month three. Pages start appearing on pages two and three of Google for the terms that matter. Clicks begin, the phone has not yet noticed. This is the point where most owners lose faith, and it is exactly the wrong time to stop. We wrote about this in how long SEO takes for a removals company.
Month twelve. If the site had some history and the area is winnable, the core town terms are on page one and organic enquiries are a steady share of the diary. Move On Removals in Bristol went from 42nd for removals Bristol in month one to 7th in month twelve, having spent five years stuck on pages four to seven before that. Every page built along the way is still ranking and still costs nothing per click. That is the compounding part, and it is the whole reason SEO is worth the wait.
When is Google Ads alone the right answer?
More often than an SEO agency would like to admit.
You need jobs next month. A mover with a quiet diary and wages to pay should not be buying a six month runway. Run Ads on your best towns and revisit SEO when cash flow allows.
You are testing a new town or service. Ads tells you in two weeks whether there is demand and what it converts at. Building pages first is doing it backwards.
Your website is not ready. SEO on a site that loads slowly, has no town pages and buries the phone number is money spent on a foundation that is not there yet.
Your market is owned by national names. In some big city searches the first page is national movers and comparison sites, and a local mover with a small site will not shift them for a long time. Ads gets you onto that page tomorrow.
In each of those, being sold SEO would be the wrong advice, and we say so on the first call.
When is SEO the right answer on its own?
You are already busy and want the diary to be yours rather than rented. The goal is stability, not a spike.
Your margin is too thin for paid clicks. Some towns have a cost per click that makes Ads marginal for a small mover. Organic is the only sensible route there.
You have history to build on. A site that has been live for years with real reviews and a few pages already on page two can be lifted quickly. That is the cheapest SEO there is.
You sell higher value work. Long distance, European and office moves are less price shopped, searched with more care, and won by the mover with the best page rather than the highest bid.
Why do the two together beat either on its own?
Because they cover each other's weakness. Ads fills the diary during the months SEO needs to start. SEO then takes over the searches you were paying for, so the Ads budget can move to the towns and services organic has not reached yet. The search terms report from the Ads account tells you which pages to build next, and the organic pages lift the quality score of the ads pointing at them.
Essex House Removals is the clearest example we have. The Google Ads targeting was fixed first, because that was where budget was being wasted week to week, and results improved before the website changed at all. Conversion tracking was rebuilt so every form, call and WhatsApp message was counted. Then the site was rebuilt with pages for the Essex towns that bring in the bigger moves, and the SEO ran underneath. Twelve months on, the site tracks paid at roughly 45% of enquiries and organic at 35%, Google Ads alone brought in 658 enquiries in a year, and the fleet went from six vans to twelve. The Essex House case study has the full account.
The order matters. Measurement first, then Ads, then the pages. Do it the other way round and you spend six months not knowing whether anything is working.
What should a mover check before spending on either?
Can you say how many enquiries you had last month and where each one came from? If not, fix tracking before anything else.
Does your site have a page for each town you send a van to? If not, Ads will convert worse and SEO cannot start.
Is your Google Business Profile finished, with reviews arriving every month? It affects both channels and costs nothing.
How soon do you need the work? That answer decides the order, and it is the first question we ask.
Both services are described plainly on SEO for removal companies and Google Ads for removal companies, and the wider picture of where removals leads come from is in how removal companies get more leads online.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO or Google Ads better for a removals company?
Neither is better in general. Ads is better when you need work within weeks or want to test a town. SEO is better when you want enquiries that keep coming after the spending stops. Most growing movers run both, Ads first.
How quickly does Google Ads work for removals?
A properly built campaign produces enquiries in the first week and has useful data within a fortnight. Cost per enquiry usually improves over the first three months as wasted searches are cut.
How long does SEO take for a removals company?
Impressions move first, within weeks. Positions move over two to four months. The phone typically notices between month three and month six on a site with some history, and later on a new site.
Is Google Ads spend separate from the management fee?
Yes. The click budget goes to Google. Any fee for managing the account is a separate line. Always ask which figure a quote refers to.
Should a new removals company start with SEO or Ads?
Ads, on the towns you can reach profitably, while the website gets its town and service pages. Start SEO once the site is ready and cash flow allows a six month view.
