How removal companies win back their leads from comparison sites

Platform leads fill the diary but keep the customer. This is the playbook we use to replace them with direct enquiries, and what a year of it looks like.

Comparison sites are the most expensive cheap leads in removals. You pay for the lead, you discount to win it, and the customer relationship stays with the platform.

None of this means switching them off overnight. It means building a direct channel that grows until the platforms become optional. Here is the order of work that gets firms there.

{ THE SHORT VERSION }

  • Platform leads keep the customer relationship. Direct enquiries build your own name.

  • Fix conversion tracking first, then point the website at one job: booking the home survey.

  • Ads finds what converts now. SEO makes the same searches free over time.

Why platform leads feel safe but keep you stuck

A shared lead arrives with four other firms attached. Everyone quotes, the customer picks a price, and the winner starts the job with margin already gone. The diary stays busy, so it feels like marketing is handled. What is actually happening is that your growth depends on an auction you do not control, with pricing pressure built in.

Direct enquiries behave differently. The customer chose you before you quoted, so price is a conversation rather than a race. Advance bookings stretch further out, and reviews, branding and word of mouth all compound the same asset: your own name.

Step one: fix the measurement before the marketing

Most removals websites we audit have broken conversion tracking. Forms fire twice, calls are not counted, and quote requests from ads get mixed in with platform traffic. Until that is fixed, nobody can say which pound of spend produced which job, so every budget decision is a guess.

What broken tracking hides

  • Which towns and job types actually convert, rather than just click

  • Keywords that eat budget without ever producing a survey booking

  • The true cost of a booked job from each channel

Fixing measurement is unglamorous work that changes everything after it. In most accounts we take over, the first month of accurate data reshapes where the budget goes.

Step two: give the website one job

A removals website does not need to be clever. It needs to get a home survey booked. Every page should make that next step obvious: clear pricing signals, real reviews, service areas the customer recognises, and a booking route that works as well on a phone as it does on a desktop.

Step three: ads for targeting, SEO for compounding

Google Ads is the fast lever. It puts you in front of people searching for a removals firm this week, and with tracking fixed you can push budget into the postcodes and job types that pay. SEO is the slow lever. It takes months to move, but every position gained keeps producing enquiries without a per-click bill attached.

Run in that order, the two channels hand work to each other. Ads proves which searches convert, SEO goes after the same terms organically, and the cost of a booked job falls as the organic share grows.

What a year of this looks like

Essex House Removals came to us after ten years of trading with six vans, spending on marketing every month without knowing what worked. Twelve months later the fleet had doubled, direct enquiries had replaced most of the platform-assigned leads in the diary, and discounting to win work had stopped. The full numbers are in the Essex House Removals case study.

Where to start

Ask one question of your current setup: if you cut every platform tomorrow, how would a customer in your area find you? If the honest answer is that they would not, start with tracking, then the website, then the channels. Or ask us to look at it with you. A strategy call costs nothing and we will show you exactly where you stand.
